College Baseball Top 25: 4.18.11

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the third team to sit atop the Prospect Junkies top 25 (Florida and Vanderbilt being the other two) after taking down incumbent Vanderbilt 2 games to 1. Ultimately I didn’t drop Vanderbilt all that far as they were impressive even in defeat and #4 Florida lost a game to Georgia that would have jumped the Gators to #3.

One of the more significant jumps in the top 25 was Oregon State who takes a seat at the top 5 table. The Beavers were under appreciated entering the season but they’ve now jumped from #18 to #5 in just two weeks following sweeps of Arizona State and Stanford.

Only one team dropped out from last week’s edition and that distinction belongs to Louisville. The Cardinals were swept by St. John’s and have now lost 6 straight.

Next weekend’s Top 25 v. Top 25 action:

#15 Oklahoma State @ #6 Texas A&M

#10 Arizona State @ #16 California

#13 UCLA @ #22 Stanford

The Gamecocks have series wins against Florida and now Vanderbilt. Oh, and they’re the defending national champions.

2.

Virginia

36-3

1-0 v. Georgetown, 1-0 v. Coastal Carolina, 3-0 v. Duke

3

East Carolina, Florida State and Georgia Tech, the only teams to beat Virginia this season, have all spent time in the top 25.

3.

Vanderbilt

32-5

1-0 v. Middle Tennessee State, 1-2 v. South Carolina

1

The Dores usually solid pen failed them in game 3, costing them the series.

4.

Florida

28-9

0-1 v. Florida State, 2-1 v. Georgia

4

In stats that don’t matter, Florida is 1-3 against Florida State in midweek games this year.

5.

Oregon State

27-7

3-0 @ Stanford

9

Back to back sweeps against Arizona State and Stanford have jumped Oregon State from #18 to #5 in two weeks.

6.

Texas A&M

26-10

0-1 @ Rice, 2-1 Baylor

5

A great outing by Jr. RHP Ross Stripling on Sunday over Logan Verrett gave the Aggies the series.

7.

Cal State Fullerton

27-9

1-0 @ Loyola Marymount, 3-0 v. UC Santa Barbara

7

The winning for the Titans should continue against Cal Poly next weekend and Pacific the night before.

8.

Texas

27-9

1-0 v. Dallas Baptist, 2-1 v. Texas Tech

6

Texas can rival anyone in the pitching department but run scoring is an issue.

9.

Florida State

26-10

1-0 v. Florida, 2-1 @ Virginia Tech

10

After being held to 1 run in Friday’s loss, the Seminoles scored 33 runs in the next two games to take the series.

10.

Arizona State

25-9

3-0 v. Washington St.

11

Nice follow up to being swept by Oregon State.

11.

Georgia Tech

27-10

1-0 v. Georgia, 2-1 v. Wake Forest

10

After such a hot start, Georgia Tech is just 5-6 in their last 11.

12.

Fresno St.

25-5

3-0 v. Nevada

12

Looking forward at Fresno’s schedule, I don’t see a whole lot of L’s.

13.

UCLA

19-12

1-0 v. Long Beach State, 2-1 v. Arizona

17

Despite Gerrit Cole’s loss on Friday, the Bruins pulled off a big series win against the then #15 Arizona Wildcats.

14.

TCU

25-11

0-1 v. Oklahoma, 3-0 v. San Diego State

18

I’m concerned about Matt Purke being held to just 4 innings and around 80 pitches while going through a “Dead Arm” period.

15.

Oklahoma State

27-9

1-0 v. Arkansas Little Rock, 2-1 v. Oklahoma

20

It’s been a steady climb for the Cowboys as they’ve established themselves as a Big 12 contender.

21

The Golden Bears will host #10 Arizona State next weekend.

17.

North Carolina

30-8

1-0 v. East Carolina, 0-3 v. NC State

8

Yeah I’m being hard on them, dropping them 9 spots, but I was just starting to believe before they were swept by NC State.

18.

Oklahoma

26-10

1-0 v. TCU, 1-2 v. Oklahoma State.

14

The rival Cowboys jumped the Sooners in the rankings following a toughly contested series which was decided by a total of 4 runs.

19.

Arkansas

26-9

1-0 @ Missouri State, 2-1 v. Mississippi St.

19

The Razerbacks will go to Lexington next weekend where they should handle the Wildcats.

20.

Rice

26-14

1-0 v. Texas A&M, 2-1 v. Tulane

22

The resurgent Owls have overcome a slow start and are still the class of Conference USA in my book.

21.

Arizona

23-13

1-2 v. UCLA

15

Arizona hasn’t had many cup cakes, but they will get Oregon next weekend who was once highly regarded but is now struggling.

22.

Stanford

16-12

1-0 v. Pacific, 0-3 v. Oregon State.

16

Cardinal will face UCLA next weekend.

23.

Stetson

29-7

1-0 v. South Florida, 3-0 v. Savannah State

24

Hatters riding a 9 game winning streak.

24.

Southern Mississippi

27-8

1-0 v. Mississippi, 3-0 v. New Orleans

NR

Golden Eagles were 20th on this list two weeks ago before losing a series to Memphis and dropping out for a week.

25.

Troy

26-9

0-1 v. Jacksonville St., 1-2 v. Middle Tennessee State

23

Rough week for the Trojans leaves them hanging onto the top 25 for dear life.
