2011 MLB Mock Draft – 4.0

**Update: Final Mock Draft from 6.5.11 posted here.**

With the draft just four days away, it’s time we’ve brought you Mock Draft 4.0. Our latest version is at least one whole number better than 3.0. In fact, this mock makes all of our previous mocks obsolete. Thus, if you’ve read one of our previous entries, forget it. However, if one of the previous mock drafts turns out to be more accurate than this one, feel free to remember it again.

Pittsburgh.gif

1. Pittsburgh Pirates – Gerrit Cole – RHP – UCLA. 6’4″ 220. Last Drafted: New York Yankees – ’08 (1st Round).

Update: Cole hit a legit 101 MPH on the gun over the weekend per ESPN’s Keith Law.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Anthony Rendon, 2.22 Anthony Rendon, 5.6 Anthony Rendon

Seattle.gif

2. Seattle Mariners – Anthony Rendon – 3B – Rice. Bats: R Throws: R. 6’0″ 190. Last Drafted: Atlanta Braves – ’08 (27th Round).

Update: Rendon’s statistics have suffered with the new bats, an overall lack of protection in the Rice lineup and a shoulder injury (non-throwing). The injury has limited him to DH most of the season but he did return to the field (at 2B) in the Conference USA Tournament.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Matt Purke, 2.22 Gerrit Cole, 5.6 Gerrit Cole

Diamondbacks.jpg

3. Arizona Diamondbacks – Danny Hultzen – LHP – Virginia. 6’2″ 195. Last Drafted: Arizona Diamondbacks – ’08 (10th Round)

Update: If Hultzen is available, he appears to be a slam dunk here and if he’s not, it’s wide open.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Gerrit Cole, 2.22 Matt Purke, 5.6 Sonny Gray

Baltimore.gif

4. Baltimore Orioles – Dylan Bundy – RHP – Owasso HS (OK). 6’1″ 200. College Commitment: Texas.

Update: Bundy seems like the popular pick here, but Gerrit Cole is another possibility.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Bubba Starling, 2.22 Taylor Jungmann, 5.6 Dylan Bundy

KansasCity.gif

5. Kansas City Royals – Trevor Bauer – RHP – UCLA. 6’1″ 175. Last Drafted: Never.

Update: A lot of talk about his work load and the effort in his delivery. I’m not concerned about him.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Taylor Jungmann, 2.22 George Springer, 5.6 Bubba Starling

Washington.gif

6. Washington Nationals – Bubba Starling – OF – Gardner Edgerton HS (KS). Bats: R Throws: R. 6’4″ 180. College Commitment: Nebraska (Football)

Update: Could also be Alex Meyer here.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Daniel Norris, 2.22 Sonny Gray, 5.6 Danny Hultzen

Diamondbacks.jpg

7. Arizona Diamondbacks (for failure to sign Barret Loux) – Sonny Gray – RHP – Vanderbilt. 5’11” 180. Last Drafted: Chicago Cubs – ’08 (27th Round).

Update: While I don’t see the Diamondbacks going cheap with this unprotected pick, they can’t take any unnecessary risks either. A college arm would make sense and either Gray or Taylor Jungmann would fit.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Jackie Bradley Jr., 2.22 Jackie Bradley Jr., 5.6 Francisco Lindor

Cleveland.gif

8. Cleveland Indians – Archie Bradley – RHP – Broken Arrow HS (OK). 6’4″ 210. College Commitment: Oklahoma.

Update: Cleveland has a recent history of taking college arms early and could swing for Taylor Jungmann or Jed Bradley but they’ve also been linked to the two sport prep star Archie Bradley.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 George Springer, 2.22 Archie Bradley, 5.6 Taylor Jungmann.

9. Chicago Cubs – George Springer – OF – Connecticut. Bats: R Throws: R. 6’3″ 205. Last Drafted: Minnesota Twins ’08 (48th Round)

Update: Bubba Starling is a real possibility here too.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Sonny Gray, 2.22 Bubba Starling, 5.6 Taylor Guerrieri

SanDiego.gif

10. San Diego Padres (for failure to sign Karsten Whitson) – Matt Barnes – RHP – Connecticut. 6’3″ 180. Last Drafted: Never.

Update: The Padres need to sign this pick and they like Barnes, who’s modest ceiling suggests that he might be singable.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Archie Bradley, 2.22 Matt Barnes, 5.6 Trevor Bauer.

Houston.gif

11. Houston Astros – Taylor Jungmann – RHP – Texas. 6’6″ 195. Last Drafted: Los Angeles Angles – ’08 (24th Round)

Update: Also seeing Francisco Lindor with this pick in a few publications and while MLB teams shouldn’t draft for need in the first round, I don’t think it would make sense with Jio Mier and Jonathan Villar already on board.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Dillon Howard, 2.22 Daniel Norris, 5.6 Archie Bradley

Milwaukee.gif

12. Milwaukee Brewers – Jed Bradley – LHP – Georgia Tech. 6’3″ 205. Last Drafted: Never.

Update: Jungmann and Lindor are also possibilities here.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Matt Barnes, 2.22 Dylan Bundy, 5.6 Jed Bradley

NYMets.gif

13. New York Mets – Levi Michael – SS – North Carolina. 5’10” 180. Bats: B Throws: R. Last Drafted: Never.

Update: While this may be a slight reach from a talent perspective, the budget pick makes sense and Michael won’t be around when the Mets pick again at #44.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 John Stilson, 2.22 Francisco Lindor, 5.6 George Springer

Florida.gif

14. Florida Marlins – Mikie Mahtook – OF – LSU. 6’1″ 205. Bats: R Throws: R. Last Drafted: Florida Marlins ’08 (39th Round).

Update: Mikie grabbed our attention as a freshman on the Tiger 2009 National Championship team where he was a gritty hard nosed defensive wiz in center field. This year he did it with the bat hitting .383 with 14 HR and a .709 slugging percentage.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Dylan Bundy, 2.22 Jed Bradley, 5.6 Daniel Norris

Milwaukee.gif

15. Milwaukee Brewers (for failure to sign Dylan Covey) – Cory Spangenberg – 3B/OF – Indian River State College – So. 6’0″ 185. Bats: L Throws: R. Last Drafted: Never

Update: Interesting prospect with speed. Should hit for average but little power and his position is unknown

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Trevor Bauer, 2.22 Trevor Bauer, 5.6 Matt Barnes

LADodgers.gif

16. Los Angeles Dodgers – Javier Baez – SS/3B – Arlington Country Day HS (FL). 6’1″ 205. College Commitment: Chipola JC.

Update: Beaz could go higher than Lindor, though unlike Lindor, he won’t stick at short.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Danny Hultzen, 2.22 Danny Hultzen, 5.6 Anthony Meo

LAAngels.gif

17. Los Angeles Angels – Francisco Lindor – SS – Montverde Academy (FL). Bats: B Throws: R. 5’11” 175. College Commitment: Florida State.

Update: Lindor could go in the top 10, but the Angles would love for him to fall and would pounce on his talent in this spot.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Blake Swihart, 2.22 Blake Swihart, 5.6 Blake Swihart.

Oakland.gif

18. Oakland Athletics – C.J. Cron – 1B – Utah – Jr. Bats: R Throws: R. 6’4″ 230. Last Drafted: Chicago White Sox ’08 (44th Round).

Update: Cron is a safe bet to hit for power as his numbers have remained strong dispute the switch to the new bats.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Josh Bell, 2.22 Anthony Meo, 5.6 Mikie Mahtook

Boston.gif

19. Boston Red Sox (from Tigers for Victor Martinez) – Alex Meyer – RHP – Kentucky. 6’9″ 210. Last Drafted: Boston Red Sox. ’08 (20th Round).

Update: Scouting Report Here. The Red Sox aggressively tried to sign him away from his Kentucky commitment so it’s conceivable Meyer comes off the board here. Meyer could go as #6 to Washington.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Francisco Lindor, 2.22 Jason Esposito, 5.6 Alex Meyer

Colorado.gif

20. Colorado Rockies – Kolten Wong – 2B – Hawaii – Jr. Bats: L Throws: R. 5’8″ 175. Last Drafted: Minnesota Twins – ’08 (16th Round)

Update: Wong should be here and I expect the Rockies to scoop him up like the little ball of middle infielder that he is.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Tyler Anderson, 2.22 Dillon Howard, 5.6 Dillon Howard.

Toronto.gif

21. Toronto Blue Jays – Tyler Anderson – LHP – Oregon. 6’3″ 195. Last Drafted: Never.

Update: I’ve had Anderson to Toronto since February and I still feel good about it.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Jason Esposito, 2.22 Tyler Anderson, 5.6 Tyler Anderson.

StLouis.gif

22. St. Louis Cardinals – Taylor Guerrieri – RHP – Spring Valley HS (SC). 6’3″ 180. College Commitment: South Carolina.

Update: The fireballer Guerrieri could go as high as #9 to the Cubs.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Derek Fisher, 2.22 John Stilson, 5.6 Jackie Bradley Jr.

Washington.gif

23. Washington Nationals (from White Sox for Adam Dunn) – Dillon Howard – RHP – Searcy HS (AR). 6’2″ 200. College Commitment: Arkansas.

Update: If Alex Meyer were to slip, the Nats would select him before the Cardinals left the podium.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Alex Meyer, 2.22 Josh Bell, 5.6 Josh Bell

TampaBay.gif

24. Tampa Bay Rays (from Red Sox for Carl Crawford) – Henry Owens – LHP – Edison HS Huntington Beach (CA). 6’5″ 185. College Commitment: Miami (FL).

Update: Owens has passed Daniel Norris as the top prep lefty in this draft.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Brandon Nimmo, 2.22 Henry Owens, 5.6 Henry Owens.

SanDiego.gif

25. San Diego Padres – Andrew Susac – C – Oregon State. 6’1″ 205. Bats: R Throws: R. Last Drafted: Philadelphia Phillies – ’09 (16th Round).

Update: This pick is a bit of a wild card and the Pads could spend more on bonus for this pick than they will with the #10 pick.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Anthony Meo, 2.22 Kolten Wong, 5.6 Andrew Susac

Boston.gif

26. Boston Red Sox (from Rangers for Adrian Beltre) – Josh Bell – OF – Jesuit Prep School of Dallas (TX). Bats: B Throws: R. 6’3″ 205. College Commitment: Texas.

Update: Though Bell recently asked teams not to select him, the Red Sox among a select group of suiters that could still afford him.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Jose Fernandez, 2.22 Jose Fernandez, 5.6 Jose Fernandez

Cincinnati.gif

27. Cincinnati Reds – Brian Goodwin – OF – Miami Dade JC. 6’1″ 190. Bats: L Thorws: R. Last Drafted – Chicago White Sox – ’09 (17th Round).

Update: The former Tar Heel would be a good fit for Cincinnati. They’d jump on Tyler Anderson if he’s here and may even take a shot at Florida State LHP Sean Gilmartin.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 – Alex Dickerson, 2.22 Alex Dickerson, 5.6 Levi Michael

Atlanta.gif

28. Atlanta Braves – Jose Fernandez – RHP – Alonso HS (FL). 6’3″ 230. College Commitment: South Florida.

Update: The Cuban born Fernandez didn’t defect until he was a teenager. A sleeper here would be Tennessee prep product Nickey Delmonico.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Zach Cone, 2.22 Zach Cone, 5.6 Brian Goodwin

SanFrancisco.gif

29. San Francisco Giants – Daniel Norris – LHP – Science Hill HS (TN). 6’3″ 180. College Commitment: Clemson.

Update: Norris entered the season as one of the top 2 or 3 prep prospects in the country and he could be a steal for someone at the end of the first or in the supplemental round.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Jed Bradley, 2.22 Brian Goodwin, 5.6 Jason Esposito.

Minnesota.gif

30. Minnesota Twins – Blake Swihart – C – Cleveland HS (NM). Bats: B Throws: R. 6’0″ 175. College Commitment: Texas.

Update: Swihart is one of my 5 favorite prospects in this draft.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Noe Ramirez, 2.22 Brandon Nimmo, 5.6 Nicky Delmonico.

TampaBay.gif

31. Tampa Bay Rays – (From Yankees for Raphael Soriano) – Brandon Nimmo – OF – Cheyenne (WY). 6’3″ 185. Bats: L Throws: R. College Commitment: Arkansas.

Update: Nimmo looks to become the best Wyoming MLB draftee since John Buck.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Logan Verrett, 2.22 Andrew Susac, 5.6 Brandon Nimmo

TampaBay.gif

32. Tampa Bay Rays – Robert Stephenson – RHP – Alhambra HS (CA). 6’2″ 185. College Commitment: Washington.

Update: Stephenson lacks the polish of some of the bigger prep names, but that didn’t stop him from opening the season with back to back no hitters.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Charlie Tilson, 2.22 Alex Meyer, 5.6 John Stilson

Texas.gif

33. Texas Rangers (From Phillies for Cliff Lee) – Austin Hedges – C – J. Serra (CA). Bats: R Throws: R. 6’1″ 190. College Commitment: UCLA.

Update: One of the better prep receivers to come out of the draft in a long time. I think hitting will be a challenge as his glove is so much more advanced combated to his bat.

Previous Mocks: 1.17 Mikie Mahtook, 2.22 Mikie Mahtook, 5.6 Charlie Tilson
