Mickey Moniak – OF– La Costa Canyon (CA), 6’2″ 190.  Bats: Left.  Throws: Right.  DOB:  May 13, 1998.  College Commitment:  UCLA

Scouted:  2015 Area Code Games (Blair Field, CA) August 4 and 5, 2015; March 29, 2016, at 2016 Boras Baseball Classic (Junipero Serra Catholic HS, CA).

A highly touted OF from Southern California, Moniak rose to elite prospect status during last year’s national showcase circuit.  Moniak is ranked by MLB.com as the #13 prospect heading into the 2016 draft, although he is not the top player nor even the top OF in CA!  The prospect who holds that distinction will be covered in the next west coast post.  Moniak was selected as the Rawlings-Perfect Game 1st Team All American California, All Region First Team.     Moniak is a gifted hitter with off the chart baseball instincts.

2015 Stats: .426 BA, 28 RBI, 12 SB

HITTING – Moniak features good plane and bat speed through zone–ball jumps off his bat! Moniak’s plus bat speed, leverage in his sweet LH swing, and exceptional hitting mechanics allow him to blister the ball all over the field.  Quick wrists and repeatable hitting mechanics indicate this is a .300 hitter in the making.

POWER – Moniak projects as a middle of the order power threat with the potential to hit the ball out to all fields right now.  The ball carries off of his bat. Moniak’s body is very projectable and as he fills out, even more power will show up.

SPEED – Moniak is an above average runner, registering a 6.58 60-yard dash. His impact type speed, aggressive approach, and excellent instincts make him a base running threat.

ARM – Moniak has a Major League average arm with loose, easy action, that is on target.  His arm is playable in CF and anywhere in the OF if need be.

DEFENSE – Moniak is a gifted athlete who can cover a lot of ground in CF. Moniak has an average arm, but his speed, first step quickness, and overall baseball instincts will allow him to provide solid defense in CF.  Moniak has the ability to make difficult plays look easy in CF.

FUTURE – Projectable body and plus instincts on both sides of the ball.  Moniak is a middle of the order power threat with legit power to all fields.    Plus bat speed and a hitterish approach at the plate seem to have Moniak poised to become a .300 hitter in the bigs.  Moniak has a lean and tall projectable body that will fill out and allow him to add strength.      Moniak’s speed is also a carrying tool.  He is an aggressive baserunner with above average speed and the ability to steal 30 bags a year. A premiere offensive contributor with the skills to become a 30-30 ballplayer, featuring above average defensive skills, set  Moniak up to become an all-star CF and serve as middle of the order offensive threat.  Former MLB OF Shawn Green is a good comp to Moniak.  It remains to be seen whether Moniak will fill out more than Green did.  At the very least he will have as much upside as Green.  Moniak is currently committed to UCLA, yet expect him to go in the mid to the bottom of the first round in June and become the top prospect for whatever organization drafts him.
