Consolidated Weekly College Baseball Ranking

Had Vanderbilt not blown a four run ninth inning lead in the second game of the Ole Miss series on Friday, they still might be ranked atop this list for another week.  However, they dropped that game 6-5 in 16 innings and now they’ve tumbled to 5th.  Despite having the most talented roster in college baseball from a prospect perspective, the Commodores aren’t playing their best baseball and have a losing record against top 50 RPI schools.

What Texas A&M, our new #1, has done this season is nothing short of amazing.  They’ve compiled a 33-3 record while missing their two best arms entering the season.  A.J. Minter (Tommy John) is out for the season, but Tyler Stubblefield (ACL) is set to return soon to aid Grayson Long and company.

I’m going to get my second look at our #4 team, Louisville, tomorrow night as they travel to Columbus for some midweek action against The Ohio State University.  I first saw Louisville split a double header against Xavier on a February 28th.  The Cardinals were sloppy and didn’t resemble a team that was pushing to make a third consecutive trip to Omaha.  All they’ve done since is go 16-2 in the ACC.

Enough of this palaver, let’s get on with it.  See below for your top college baseball teams.

Consolidated Weekly College Baseball Ranking

We’re at the halfway point in the college baseball season and the elite teams are starting to separate themselves.  Vanderbilt remains atop the consolidated rankings for the second straight week, though LSU and Texas A&M, the first team to reach the 30 win mark, also received 1st place votes.

Illinois was the big riser in our rankings, jumping from 20 to 13, leading an unprecedented Big Ten Conference contingent with four ranked schools.

Perfect Game continues to be an outlier in several respects.  They’re the only publication to rank Oregon State (15th), and they’re the odd man out on Rice.  The Owls are ranked no less than 15th by the other four publications but have yet to crack the top 25 for Perfect Game.

Consolidated Weekly College Baseball Ranking

LSU has been dethroned atop our Consolidated Rankings with a series following a series loss to Kentucky and Vanderbilt regains the spot it held just a few weeks ago.

The SEC continues to dominate, holding 4 of the top 5 spots, but the fact that the Conference only holds one other top 25 team (South Carolina – 15th) could indicate that there is less depth than in previous years.

Perfect Game continues to be somewhat of an outlier.  Some of their rankings that go against the grain including leaving Rice and Oklahoma State off their top 25, and ranking Oregon State 14th while all other industry leaders left them off.

Prospect Junkies Consolidated Rank

Consolidated Weekly College Baseball Ranking – March 23, 2015

We finally have consensus at the top of the Prospect Junkies Consolidated College Baseball Rankings with LSU nabbing the top spot following a 2-1 series win at Arkansas.

Preseason #1 Vanderbilt was just 90 feet away from dropping the series at Auburn.  The Commodores  held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th inning in Saturday’s finale, but Auburn quickly tied the game while maintaining bases loaded with nobody out.  Most coaches would have made a pitching change, but Tim Corbin stuck with Ben Bowden who rebounded to escape the inning without any additional damage.  Vanderbilt regained the lead with a Bryan Reynolds sac fly in the 10th and Bowden worked a perfect 10th to secure the win.  The reward for such perseverance is the prestigious #2 spot in my rankings, an honor rivaled only by their 2014 national championship.

Last week’s #1, TCU, dropped a home series to Oklahoma State 1-2, causing the Horned Frogs to fall to #4 while propelling the Cowboys to a #26 ranking.

While there seems to be a lot of consensus among the top 7 or 8 teams by the industry’s leading publications, a few teams are clearly polarizing.

Southern California’s overall number is negatively skewed by the fact that Perfect Game (PG) ranks the Trojans 9 spots lower (22nd) than everyone else.  PG also seems to be the outlier on Rice, leaving them out of their top 25 while every other publication has the Owls in their top 15.

The jury appears to still be out on Maryland as well.  The 17-4 Terrapins earned a #11 ranking from D1Baseball.com while being left out of the Baseball America list.

Consolidated Weekly College Baseball Ranking – March 16, 2015

Virginia topped last week’s inaugural consolidated ranking, and proceeded to lose four straight games, getting crushed at home 14-5 by Old Dominion on Wednesday then getting swept by instate rival Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.  The terrible week plummeted the Cavilers all the way to #8 in this week’s edition.

TCU swept Baylor, propelling the Horned Frogs to the top spot this week, but they’re followed closely by Florida and LSU, both of whom also received first place nods from publications that we track.

SEC clubs occupy five of the top six slots, with Vanderbilt, unbeaten Texas A&M and South Carolina rounding out that group.  After that grouping however, it becomes increasingly more difficult to find consensus.  Clarity could come by way of a couple good top 25 conference match-ups this weekend.

#16 Arizona State will travel to Eugene to take on #11 Oregon in PAC 12 action and #8 Virginia will host #14 Florida State in ACC play.

Prospect Junkies Consolidated Rank

Consolidated Weekly College Baseball Rankings – March 11, 2015

We’re trying something new at Prospect Junkies.  In years past we’ve done our own Top 25 ranking. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of work.  However, as college baseball’s popularity continues to trend upward, the quality of coverage has also improved.  There are a number of sites that publish a Top 25 ranking and rather than duplicating an article with my own rankings that would differ only slightly, I thought it would be better to come up with an analytical system by averaging out the lists of some of the more highly regarded websites that cover the sport we love.

First, a few details on how the system works.  It’s quite simple, we’re taking an average of five industry leading websites (listed in the “Key” below) and consolidating them to form our Prospect Junkies rankings.  Some of the sites we selected rank 30 teams each week while others only rank 25 and we assigned those values to each website accordingly.  Each team that was ranked on at least one list is entered on the left most column. If that team was not ranked by a particular publication, they’re assigned the value of 31 as leaving it blank would positively skew the results.  Now that we have the math out of the way, let’s look at the rankings themselves.

Let’s start with our inaugural top ranked team, Virginia.  While lacking a signature series win, the 12-1 Cavaliers are led by premier MLB Draft pitching prospects Nathan Kirby (3-1, 0.71 ERA) and Connor Jones (4-0, 0.78 ERA).

As demonstrated below, Virginia’s superior ranking was far from unanimous, as Florida (14-2) and LSU (15-1) also received first place votes and TCU earned an average just six tenths of a point away from the top spot.

Vanderbilt (12-4), the defending National Champions, and consensus preseason #1 has battled injuries and not yet knocked off the winter rust, going 1-2 in last weekend’s Dodgertown Classic including losses to TCU and USC.
