2016 MLB Draft Scouting Report: Will Smith

CdMni-SW0AESTnI

Perhaps no player is moving up draft boards quicker than Louisville catcher Will Smith (Photo Courtesy of GoCards.com).

By: Burke Granger

Will Smith – C – Louisville.  6’0″ 192.  Bats: R.  Throws: R.  DOB: March 28, 1995.  Last Drafted:  Never.

SCOUTED:

Xavier Musketeers @ Louisville Cardinals.  February 28, 2015, Louisville, KY.

Louisville Cardinals @ Ohio State Buckeyes – April 14, 2015. Columbus, Ohio.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Louisville Cardinals.  March 11, 2016, Louisville, KY.

The Cardinals didn’t need to go far to recruit Will Smith, who went to nearby Kentucky Country Day in Louisville where he was a two time all-state performer.  After managing 77  at bats in 39 games as a freshman, Smith opened this 2015 season batting cleanup behind Corey Ray.

2016 MLB Draft Scouting Report: Dane Dunning

By: Burke Granger

Dane Dunning – RHP – Florida. 6’3″ 205. Class: Junior. DOB: 12.20.94. Last Drafted: 2013 – Toronto Blue Jays (34th Round).

Scouted:

Florida Gators @ Kentucky Wildcats – March 25, 2016.  Lexington, Kentucky.

Florida Gators @ Kentucky Wildcats – March 27, 2016.  Lexington, Kentucky.

In previous write ups, I’ve mentioned how Florida plucked A.J. Puk from Iowa, and Buddy Reed from Rhode Island.  They didn’t need to go as far to recruit Dane Dunning.  Pitching for Clay High School, just 50 miles away from Gainesville, Dunning earned All-State honors and was ranked as the 490th best player in the 2013 draft by Baseball America.

College Baseball Prospect Update – Pitchers 3.21.15

I was able to check out what was I thought was to be the premier Big 10 Conference pitching matchup of the season.  Draft eligible sophomores Cam Vieaux of Michigan State and Travis Lakins of Ohio State squared off at Bill Davis Stadium Saturday afternoon and both were hit hard.

Ohio State won game 6-5, and while Vieaux and Lakins didn’t put up the stat line I had hoped, I did speak to on NL scout who liked what he saw from both of them.

Lakins sat at 90-92 with his fastball, topping out at 93 and held his velocity all the way through his start.  His breaking ball is sharp 74-76 and he sparingly threw a changeup at 81-82 but didn’t seem to have a feel for the pitch.  In this start, he lacked command of all pitches.

Vieux opened the game sitting 90-91 with his fastball but was down to 86-89 in the 3rd and 4th innings.  His slurvy breaker is longer and looper.  He relies heavily on this pitch and will throw it in any count.  When ahead, he’ll throw one down, out of the zone fishing for the swing and miss, and he’ll throw a “get me over” curve in a fastball count for a strike.

Detailed game reports will follow as we get closer to the draft on both players.
