Web Update Images

Tis the season for Mock Drafts, and late last week Baseball America and MLB Pipeline released their latest iterations.

By: Burke Granger

As mentioned a couple weeks ago, Prospect Junkies won’t be doing a Mock Draft this season. As we lead up to first day of the MLB Draft on June 9th, however, we want to use this site as forum to analyze Mock Drafts released by some of the industry leaders to see where we can gain some consensus and where we can examine some deviation.

Scouted:

2016 MLB Draft Scouting Report: Sheldon Neuse

By: Burke Granger

Sheldon Neuse.  6’0″ 195.  Bats: R.  Throws: R.  DOB: December 10, 1994.  Last Drafted:  2013 (Texas Rangers – 38th Round).

SCOUTED:  Oklahoma Sooners @ West Virginia Mountaineers, April 18, 2015.  Morgantown, WV.

A product of Fossil Ridge High School in Keller, Texas, Neuse was a highly regarded prep prospect.  Ranked as the 303rd best prospect in the 2013 draft by Baseball America, Neuse slid to the 38th round thanks, in part, to his strong college commitment to Oklahoma.

2016 MLB Draft Scouting Report: Dane Dunning

By: Burke Granger

Dane Dunning – RHP – Florida. 6’3″ 205. Class: Junior. DOB: 12.20.94. Last Drafted: 2013 – Toronto Blue Jays (34th Round).

Scouted:

Florida Gators @ Kentucky Wildcats – March 25, 2016.  Lexington, Kentucky.

Florida Gators @ Kentucky Wildcats – March 27, 2016.  Lexington, Kentucky.

In previous write ups, I’ve mentioned how Florida plucked A.J. Puk from Iowa, and Buddy Reed from Rhode Island.  They didn’t need to go as far to recruit Dane Dunning.  Pitching for Clay High School, just 50 miles away from Gainesville, Dunning earned All-State honors and was ranked as the 490th best player in the 2013 draft by Baseball America.

2016 MLB Draft Prospect: Kyle Cody

By: Burke Granger

Kyle Cody – RHP – Kentucky. 6’7″ 245.  Class: Senior.  DOB:  August 9, 1994.  Last Drafted:  2015 (Minnesota Twins – 2nd Round).

Scouted:

Vanderbilt @ Kentucky, May 3, 2015.  Lexington, Kentucky.

Florida @ Kentucky, March 27, 2016.  Lexington, Kentucky.

The Leinenkugel Grapefruit Shandy isn’t the only Chippewa Falls Wisconsin export that I’ve been enjoying in recent years. Kyle Cody, the Badger State product, ranked as the 267th best prospect in the 2012 draft by Baseball America, but slid to the Phillies in the 33rd round.  It wouldn’t be the first, or last time that Cody would be drafted.

In the summer following his sophomore season in Lexington, Cody excelled in the Cape Cod League.  In 8 starts that summer, Cody worked in the mid 90’s and posted a 2.80 ERA while striking out 33 in 35.1 innings for the Wareham Gatemen.

2016 MLB Draft Scouting Report: Gavin Lux

By: Burke Granger

Gavin Lux – SS – Indian Trail HS (Wis.).  6’2″ 175.  Bats: R.  Throws: L.  DOB: November 23, 1997.  College Commitment: Arizona State.

SCOUTED: Prep Baseball Report’s Super 60, McCook (Ill.).  February 7, 2016.

In what’s shaping up to be a banner year for Midwest high school baseball, Gavin Lux joins Ben Rortvedt and Cooper Johnson as potential early round picks coming from the Illinois/Wisconsin area.  Combine them with class blue chippers Riley Pint and Joey Wentz from Kansas, and the Heartland of America now looks like a major manufacturer of talent in this year’s draft crop.

Kyle Lewis – OF – Mercer.  6’4″ 210.  Bats: R.  Throws: R.  DOB: July 13, 1995.  Last Drafted:  Never.

SCOUTED:  Mercer Bears @ Butler Bulldogs: May 14, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Undrafted out of Shiloh HS in Snellville, Georgia, Lewis went to nearby Mercer University where he had a solid but unspectacular freshman season before bursting onto the scene as a sophomore.
