Yes, this is the part of the report when I’m obliged to tell you that Cavan is the son Craig Biggio.  You may have heard of him.  The elder Biggio collected over 3,000 hits over a 20 year Major League career that culminated with his Hall of Fame induction in 2015.

Blake Rutherford – OF – Chaminade Prep School (CA). 6’2″ 190.  Bats: Left.  Throws: Right.  DOB: 5.2.1997.  College Commitment:  UCLA

Scouted:  2015 Area Code Games (Blair Field, CA) August 4 and 5, 2015; March 29, 2016, at 2016 Boras Classic (Junipero Serra Catholic HS, CA).

The top prep outfielder from California and according to MLB.com, and the seventh best 2016 draft prospect, Rutherford’s name will be called amongst the top 5 picks in the first round of this year’s draft.  Rutherford has excelled on the national stage, and shined playing for the 18U USA National Team.  He is a polished ballplayer who will be thrilling MLB fans in a few years with his bat and athleticism.

Scouted:  University of Florida @ University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.  March 25, 2016.

With A.J. Puk from Iowa and Buddy Reed from Rhode Island,  Florida clearly demonstrates a wide recruiting footprint.  That’s what 4 trips to Omaha in 6 years will do for a program.  They’ve further peacocked their reach by nabbing Logan Shore from Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

Anthony Kay – LHP – Connecticut.  6’0″ 187.  Class: Junior.  DOB:  March 21, 1995.  Last Drafted:  2013 (New York Mets – 29th Round).

Scouted: University of Connecticut @ University of Cincinnati.  Cincinnati, Ohio.  4.8.16.

Kay hails from Ward Melville High School in Long Island, the same school that produced Steven Matz.  Like Matz, Kay was selected by the New York Mets out of high school, though Kay followed through on his college commitment and attended UConn.

In speaking with a scout last season, I mentioned that I hadn’t yet seen Zack Burdi pitch.  His reply was, “if you’ve seen his brother, then you’ve seen Zack because they’re the same guy.”

Kyle Funkhouser – RHP – Louisville. 6’3″ 225. Class: Senior. DOB: 3.16.94. Last Drafted: 2015 – Los Angeles Dodgers (35th Overall).

Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Louisville Cardinals.  March 11, 2016, Louisville, KY.

Regarded as the 360th best draft prospect in the 2012 draft by Baseball America as a prep star at Oak Forest (Ill.), Funkhouser went undrafted and followed through on his commitment to Louisville.

While working primarily in relief as a freshman, Funkhouser still managed 6 starts and accounted for Louisville’s only shutout that season (against Villanova).  Funkhouser got his first taste of Omaha as a freshman, but it wouldn’t be his last.  The Cardinals 2013 trip to the College World Series was their first since 2007.  While Louisville went two and out in 2013, Funkhouser saw relief action in an 11-4 loss to Oregon State putting together a 2.1IP, 2H 0R, 0ER, 2BB, 4K line.

Bryan Reynolds – OF – Vanderbilt.  6’2″ 210.  Bats: Switch.  Throws: Right.  Class: Junior.  DOB: January 27, 1995.  Last Drafted:  Never.

Scouted:  Vanderbilt @ Kentucky 5/1-5/3, 2015.

Though he was not highly regarded coming out of Brentwood H.S. (Tenn.), Reynolds burst onto the scene for the 2014 national champion Commodores as a freshman.  He led the team in hitting (.338), ahead of then sophomore Dansby Swanson (.333) on his way to a Freshman All-American season.
