Prospect Roundup: Week 11

Virginia ace Connor Jones tossed a complete game four-hitter against Pittsburgh on Saturday in ACC action.

As the June 9th MLB draft approaches, Florida’s A.J. Puk is solidifying his spot as the top arm in this class.  After exiting a start earlier this month with back spasms and then sitting out the following weekend, Puk has looked like the 1:1 candidate he is since his return.

This weekend against Georgia, Puk struck out 10 over 6 innings, while surrendering just 4 hits, a run, and 3 walks.  Puk did leave this start with what coach Kevin O’Sullivan later called a hand cramp so that will be something to monitor this weekend to determine if it’s something more serious.

Not a single Major League Baseball pitcher threw more than 9 innings in a game in 2015, yet this weekend alone we saw two pitching prospects who could go off the board on the first day of the draft exceed the 9 inning mark in a game.

Prospect Roundup: Week 9

2016 MLB Draft Scouting Report: Logan Shore

By: Burke Granger

Logan Shore – RHP – Florida.  6’2″ 215.  Class: Junior.  DOB:  December 28, 1994.  Last Drafted:  2013 (Minnesota Twins – 29th Round).

Scouted:  University of Florida @ University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.  March 25, 2016.

With A.J. Puk from Iowa and Buddy Reed from Rhode Island,  Florida clearly demonstrates a wide recruiting footprint.  That’s what 4 trips to Omaha in 6 years will do for a program.  They’ve further peacocked their reach by nabbing Logan Shore from Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

College Prospect Roundup: Week 3

Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser bounced back nicely with a 12 strikeout performance on Friday, after a rough pair of starts to open the season.

By: Burke Granger

After lackluster starts against SIU Edwardsville (5IP, 7H, 2R, 4BB, 3K) and Ole Miss (3.2IP, 3H, 6R, 7BB, 6K), Louisville’s Kyle Funkhouser settled down this week in what was his best start of the season.  Against Princeton on Friday night, Funkhouser was dominant, allowing just 4 hits while striking out 12 over 7 innings in route to his second win of the season.  Perhaps most importantly, Funkhouser, who has a career 4.37 bb/9 ratio, allowed just one walk in the contest.
