Mickey Moniak – OF– La Costa Canyon (CA), 6’2″ 190. Bats: Left. Throws: Right. DOB: May 13, 1998. College Commitment: UCLA
Scouted: 2015 Area Code Games (Blair Field, CA) August 4 and 5, 2015; March 29, 2016, at 2016 Boras Baseball Classic (Junipero Serra Catholic HS, CA).
A highly touted OF from Southern California, Moniak rose to elite prospect status during last year’s national showcase circuit. Moniak is ranked by MLB.com as the #13 prospect heading into the 2016 draft, although he is not the top player nor even the top OF in CA! The prospect who holds that distinction will be covered in the next west coast post. Moniak was selected as the Rawlings-Perfect Game 1st Team All American California, All Region First Team. Moniak is a gifted hitter with off the chart baseball instincts.

While this draft class is lacking a premier 1:1 frontrunner, there is significant depth at a number of positions; perhaps none greater than the class of college outfielders, which offers power, speed, and defense. Of the deep class of college outfielders, none entered the season with higher expectations than Louisville’s Corey Ray and Florida’s Buddy Reed.
Buddy Reed – Outfielder – Florida. Bats: B. Throws: R. 6’4″ 210. DOB: April 27, 1995. Last Drafted: 2013 – Texas Rangers (35th Round).
Three Game Series: Florida Gators @ Kentucky Wildcats, March 25-27, 2016, Lexington, KY.
The major leagues are full players who were multi-sport athletes in high school and Reed looks to have his name added to that list. While most of these athletes excelled in football and/or basketball (in addition to baseball), Reed’s other sports were soccer and hockey. Playing for St. George’s School in Middleton, Rhode Island, Reed was the soccer team’s leading scorer, while holding down first line duties on the ice.
Corey Ray – Outfielder – Louisville. Bats: L, Throws: L. 5’11” 185. DOB: Sept. 22, 1994. Last Drafted: 2013 – Seattle Mariners (33rd Round).
Xavier Musketeers @ Louisville Cardinals. February 28, 2015, Louisville, KY (DH)
Louisville Cardinals @ Ohio State Buckeyes – April 14, 2015. Columbus, Ohio.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Louisville Cardinals. March 11, 2016, Louisville, KY (DH).
From Kyle Funkhouser to the Brothers Burdi, Louisville dominates the Chicagoland recruiting territory. Corey Ray played his high school ball at the Simeon Career Academy in Chicago’s South Side. Cracking the Baseball America top 500 draft rankings in 2013 (480th), Ray slid to the Mariners in the 33rd round, chose not to sign and followed through on his commitment to Louisville.
